The official medium of instruction and correspondence is English. All new students undertake proficiency tests in general Biblical knowledge, and those who have not passed English at Higher Grade, an English language skills test (see also particular requirements for foreign students).
Classroom instruction includes lectures, group work, in-class presentations, multi-media presentations, interviews and written assignments. Experiential learning strategies include quantitative research, self-directed ministry projects and focus groups.
Each student is required to do a practical training assignment in a local church or a form of Christian ministry each academic year. Successful fulfillment of the practical training assignment requirements is a prerequisite for graduation.
Students are also provided with other opportunities to represent the Bible Institute at various places on outreach teams during the year. Each student is assigned to a team as part of the training at the Bible Institute of South Africa. During ministry week, teams work in local churches or further a-field, living in these communities, many of whom may be cross-cultural, while engaging in various forms of ministry, including preaching and teaching in a variety of contexts.
